A century of mosque design in Canada will be documented in this blog. This architectural survey will be conducted by  Dr. Tammy Gaber over the next two years, with research visits to almost all of the regions in the country.

The project began in August 2015 with a visit to the most northern mosque in the country, in Inuvik. As well as a trip to the local mosque in Sudbury, to document the building. This was followed in October 2015 with a visit to the Prairie region looking at mosques in Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Lac La Biche and Red Deer.

In December 2015 I visited a number of mosques in various cities in British Columbia including: Prince George, Victoria & Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, Richmond, Surrey and Delta, Burnaby, Port Coquitlam and Vancouver.

During the summer that same year, I took a trip to the eastern coast of Canada and visited a number of mosques in many cities including: Fredericton, Moncton, & Saint John in New Brunswick, Halifax & Dartmouth, Truro & Sydney in Nova Scotia, Charlottetown in Prince Edward Island, St.John’s in Newfoundland.  The trip home provided an opportunity to stop in Kingston, Ontario to see the mosque located there as well.

In October 2016 I visited Montréal and Québec City in Québec. In Montréal I visited mosques in Western Montréal, Northern Montréal, the downtown area of Montréal, and Brossard. In Québec City I visited three mosques.

I traveled to Winnipeg, Manitoba in November 2016. I visited mosques and Islamic Centres in the Waverly West, Niverville areas of Winnipeg, as well as mosques and Islamic Centres in the St.Vital, Central  and Elmwood areas of Winnipeg.

In April 2017 I traveled to Iqaluit, Nunavut to visit the Canadian mosque closest to the North Pole. In addition to this, I visited Nepean, a city just outside of Ottawa’s inner core.

Visiting the National Capital Region, three places of worship in Ottawa and one in Gatineau were documented. Shortly after, in May 2017, I visited southern Ontario seeing mosques in Niagara Falls and St. Catherines, as well as Hamilton.

Nearing the end of my research project I visited my hometown, Waterloo, and the surrounding area. Documenting mosques located in Waterloo & Cambridge, Guelph, and London during the month of June 2017.

In July 2017 I went on my final trip to the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) to document only a handful of the several places of worship in the area. The trip included visits to Burlington, North York, Toronto, Mississauga & Brampton, Maple & Thornhill, and Oshawa, Pickering & Scarborough.
