Inuvik, NWT – visited in August 2015
The Midnight Sun mosque in Inuvik is the most northern mosque in the country, and in the hemisphere, and is located two hundred kilometers above the Arctic circle. The Muslim community in the city about 100 people who used to previously meet and have services in the Our Lady of Victory ‘Igloo’ church and in a small trailer. The mosque was built in Winnipeg, and transported by truck and barge to Inuvik, covering over 4000 kilometers. Open since 2010 the mosque has witnessed some minor additions including a minaret and dome, and has expanded it’s community activities to include an additional building adjacent to it serving as the second food bank in the city, funded by charity donations by Muslims in Canada.
